Curtis Nybo

Curtis Nybo is a data scientist that focuses on research and development of data science and Artificial Intelligence applications. A large part of his role is developing in-depth technical solutions for clients across all industries. Curtis leverages over 10 years experience in both industry and academics directly related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, and mathematics/physics. In addition to providing technical expertise in this area, he also leads teams of data scientists from project research to production deployments. Curtis chairs a global quantum computing community of practice at CGI, comprising of an international team focused on delivering quantum applications.

Curtis has a Master Degree in Quantitative Finance and is completing a Master Degree in Astrophysics. His MSc Quant. Finance thesis research focused on using Neural Networks to predict stock sector volatility, in comparison to the performance of the standard ARCH models. He has a passion for data science, physics, finance, statistics, computer science, and astronomy.

My background in both academics and industry has been using neural networks and other machine learning methods for tasks such as classification, prediction, NLP, and more.

Quantum Computing

Developing and applying quantum computing to solve real problems. Focused on development with D-Wave and Azure Quantum hardware.

Physics/Statistics

Understanding AI models at a mathematical level is crucial. My academic background focused on the statistics and mathematics in Astrophysics and AI. Applying this knowledge to space exploration is a passion!

Finance / Economics

Main studies were applying AI/Machine Learning to finance and economics. Thesis focused on using these models to predict stock price volatility. Studies include econometrics, game theory, derivatives, and more.

Specializing in research, development, and implementation of cutting-edge AI models to solve business problems. I possess expert-level technical knowledge in the areas of Generative AI, machine learning, neural networks, and physics. Overall, I am responsible for providing research around cutting-edge AI advances. My specialization lies in developing AI applications using state-of-the-art models where my expertise focused on many areas of AI, such as time series forecasting, machine learning, GenAI, NLP, computer vision, process mining, and more. I also chair the Quantum Computing Community of Practice at CGI, comprising of a global team of physicists, data scientists, and developers working together to deliver quantum applications.

As a director, I provide consulting to clients around AI and lead teams of data scientists. My skillset allows for rapid development of proof-of-concept and production AI applications utilizing tools such as python, SQL, Azure, AWS, Celonis, and more. I specialize in development within the Microsoft Azure cloud environment or locally. My quantum computing skillset is mainly focused on D-Wave's systems, as well as providers within Azure Quantum.

Senior Consultant

Provide expertise and consulting to various client engagements around natural language processing (NLP) with a focus on development and research in large language models (GPT-4, Palm-2, Llama 2, and more). Other specialty areas include machine learning, process mining, and digital transformation across multiple industries. Extensive experience working with stakeholders of various firms and government organizations to develop solutions to their business problems using data science.

A Few Project Highlights:
• Developed a Generative AI program that writes SQL queries for large databases using Azure OpenAI's GPT-4 for a large US telecom company. Project went from PoC and into production with thousands of users.
• Developed and deployed an AI model using NLP methods that could interpret thousands of call center transcriptions providing pro-active help to call center agents in real-time.
• Used NLP methods to provide topic modelling analysis for >30,000 shared inbox emails for a government organization.
• Developed a Digital Transformation Master Plan for a large Alberta city, guiding their technology investment over the next 5 – 10 years based on stakeholder input.
• Used data science and machine learning methods to analyze the datasets of a provincial government call center to find root causes of issues and identify potential solutions.
• Saved over $5 million for a large oil company by improving efficiency of IT Processes.

The George S. Dembroski Student Managed Portfolio Trust is a long only portfolio of equities comprising of $1.4 million AUM. The portfolio is fully managed by a team of Edwards School of Business students with a focus on growth equities in 8 industries. My team was responsible for analyzing and managing the technology sector equities in the portfolio, producing buy and sell recommendations and performing market analysis to contribute to the future growth of the portfolio. Other duties included: • Providing weekly updates of our technology holdings • Developing risk management strategies through diversification and hedging • Presenting and defending investment ideas to the entire team Examples of successful presentations: • Sell holdings of the 3D technology company Stratasys LTD (SSYS) for a profit in order to reduce our exposure to uncertainty in the 3D tech industry as we held two large holdings of 3D companies. The sell presentation went through with zero opposition. • Critical analysis of the oil and energy sector beginning in October 2014 through the year and it's effect on equities and the Canadian dollar as well as other world economies.
